October 2017

Even as the leaves begin to change and the chillier weather sets in, our community in the Appalachian Forest Heritage Area is hard at work! Happy Halloween from all of us in the AFHA. The AFHA is still looking for one new member to join the Hands On Team.

What is the
Hands On Team?

Kyle Pajarito
The Hands On Team is a group of AmeriCorps members serving in the Appalachian Forest Heritage Area. Members of the Hands On Team (HOT) work on a variety of historic preservation community buildings and outdoor conservation projects doing primarily hands on tasks. Tasks include window repair, structural stabilization, reconstructing porches or other parts of structures, interior repair, painting, plaster repair, timber wall straightening and repair, site prep and cleanup, archaeological excavation, trail building, and landscape projects.

A Year in Service

Grace DeMeo
On October 11th over 200 AmeriCorps volunteers swore an oath in Charleston to get things done in the state of West Virginia. Fourty of those members belonged to the Appalachian Forest Heritage Area AmeriCorps team. The volunteers dedicated their morning to volunteering with local organization projects. These projects ranged from assisting the Charleston Fire Department with their smoke alarm installation outreach to cleaning up garbage within the city to maintaining a community garden.

After volunteering, all AmeriCorps members proceeded to the West Virginia Capitol building and swore in to their national service, which was led by cabinet secretary Gayle Manchin. It is our hope that everyone looks forward to a wonderful year with them!
